Both offenses were strong in Melbourne victory over Berwick on Sunday, out-slugging the Cougars in a game that went over 3 hours. Melbourne captured the lead in the second inning when Scalzo homered to deep left field on an 0-2 count, scoring two runs.

Berwick evened things up at four in the bottom of the third inning when Barnett singled on a 1-0 count, scoring 2 runs.

The Demons took the lead for good in the top of the fourth, breaking open the game with 7 runs. Fittock homered scoring two runs, Sayers doubled for two more runs, Neave homered scoring another 2, with the last run bookended by Fittock after a hit by pitch.

Berwick came back with a three-run home run of their own in the bottom of the seventh but that was the last of the scoring for the day, Melbourne hanging on for an 11-7 win.

Godbold led things off on the hill for Melbourne, surrendering 4 runs on 4 hits over three innings, striking out one and walking one. Kurtis Smith threw 5 innings in relief, giving up 6 hits and 3 runs with six strikeouts and a couple of walks. Bronson Neave closed out the ninth inning giving up a single hit.

Melbourne collected 12 hits for the day, Sayers, Daniels, Fittock and Scalzo had multiple hits, McMahon, Neave, Jones and Pickett 1 each. AJ Fittock had 3 RBIs.

Next week is the past players function and opening home game for Melbourne, playing for the Whitehorse cup against local rivals Blackburn.
