Melbourne Defeated Blackburn on Sunday despite trailing 9-0 in the sixth innings.
Melbourne tools the lead late in the game to secure a 12-9 win in a game of two very different halves. The Demons only managed a single hit in the first five frames in a one sided contest, allowing 9 runs, 3 long home bombs and an error that teetered on the edge of a mercy rule result.
However, the game turned in a wild eighth innings with 3 Blackburn errors, a walk, wild pitch, a go ahead single by Ollie McMahon and a double by Nathan Aron broke the game open. The seventh innings for Melbourne produced 4 runs after a couple of errors, hit by pitch and a 2 RBI single by McMahon. Ollie went 3-5 on the day with 3 RBI’s to lead the offense, Pickett also had multiple hits for the Demons, Jones, Sayers and Scalzo had a double each, Fittock a single. The solid defence by Melbourne was the difference on the day, with Blackburn committing 7 errors to Melbourne’s 1 despite outhitting the Demons 10-9.
McMahon also got the win on the hill, pitching the decisive 7th and 8th innings striking out 3, Bronson Neave sealed the win with an uneventful ninth. Kurtis Smith started the game for the Demons, Smith went three innings allowing six runs on five hits, striking out two. Godbold also threw three innings allowing 3 runs on four hits the three K’s.
