Melbourne secured a win over Sunshine on Sunday after things got moving in the first innings, scoring 3 runs on a walk by Fittock and Jones, a double by Daniels, a single by Neave and a wild pitch.
Scoring dried up for until late in the game when a Fittock sac fly scored Mitchell and blew the lead out to 4-0. Sunshine managed a single run in the seventh to keep them in the game, but the Demons bullpen held on for the win in an important game for playoff qualification. The win consolidates fourth position for the Demons with four remaining games to go in the season.
Smith was the winning pitcher for Melbourne, he went five innings, giving up zero runs on two hits and striking out three. Bowen, Godbold and Jones all put in good work in relief, only giving up a single hit each, steering the Demons home.
At the plate Daniels led the offense with a couple of doubles and a single, Pickett with 3 singles, and Neave with a single.
