The firsts lost the lead late in a 7-4 defeat to Waverley on Sunday. The game was tied at four with Waverley batting in the bottom of the eighth when Sheldon-Collins singled on a 2-2 count putting Waverley ahead.

Luke Papanicolaou was the winning pitcher, allowing one hit and a run over two innings, striking out two and walking on. Mitch Ley recorded the last three outs for the save. Darcy Longstaff was tough to hit, collecting 16 strikeouts over 6 innings.

Andrew Kent took the loss for the Demons, Lardy’s held the strong Waverley hitters with his crafty twirlers for a couple of innings, but two bombs in the 8th turned the tide. Lardy lasted three innings allowing six hits and five runs. Kurtis Smith started the game for Melbourne, he allowed three hits and two runs over four and a third innings, striking out four in an excellent early season start.
