Melbourne defeated Mulgrave 13-12 on Saturday thanks to a walk off single by Jacob Rizio in the bottom of the 9th, down to their last strike.
The game was tied at 12 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, when on full count Rizio singled up the middle to spark some wild walk off celebrations.
Both pitching staffs had their hands full, frequently dealing with runners on base. Melbourne tallied 13 hits for the game, Mulgrave 14 in what was at times a raucous contest, tempers spilling over at times.
Melbourne got on the board with an Ollie McMahon single, a Bronson Neave single and a Fittock double scoring another two in the first innings. However the Demons offense went to sleep and fell behind 11-5 until the bottom of the sixth when a series of walks and hit by pitches delivered 3 runs. Melbourne stayed in the hunt with a single run in the seventh and eighth innings put them in striking distance in the final frame.
In the bottom of the ninth, McMahon lead off with a double and Daniels followed suit with one of his own cutting the margin to one. An error and a sacrifice fly by Jones tied the game, an intentional walk and a fielders choice left the tying run on second. Rizio delivered on a full count scoring Fittock.
Mitch Bowen started on the mound for the Demons, pitching two and two thirds allowing 5 hits and 4 runs striking out one. Kurtis Smith threw four and a third innings, allowing seven hits and 5 earned runs, striking out four. Bronson Neave pitched the last two innings earning the win, giving up two hits and one run striking out two.
Melbourne will play top of the table Upwey FTG next Sunday at Kings Park which should be an exciting final game before the Christmas break.
